1888 - Diplomat and financier Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. was born in Boston.

1901 - President William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York; he would die from his injuries on September 14th.

1909 - American explorer Robert Peary sent a telegram from Indian Harbor, Labrador, announcing that he had reached the North Pole five months earlier.

1916 - The first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, was opened in Memphis, Tennessee by Clarence Saunders.

1941 - Nazi Germany required all Jews over the age of six to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothes.

1943 - 79 people were killed when a New York-bound Pennsylvania Railroad train derailed and crashed in Philadelphia.

1970 - Palestinian guerrillas seized control of three jetliners, which were later blown up on the ground in Jordan after the passengers and crews were evacuated.

1985 - All 31 people aboard a Midwest Express Airlines DC-9 were killed when the Atlanta-bound jetliner crashed just after takeoff from Milwaukee.

1997 - More than 2 billion people worldwide watched Princess Diana's funeral on television.

2002 - Meeting outside Washington, D.C. for only the second time since 1800, Congress convened in New York to pay homage to the victims and heroes of September 11.

2004 - Former President Bill Clinton underwent successful heart bypass surgery.

2005 - The California Legislature became the first legislative body in the nation to approve same-sex marriages. (Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger later vetoed the bill.)

2006 - President George W. Bush acknowledged previously secret CIA prisons around the world and said 14 high-value terrorism suspects had been transferred from the system to Guantanamo Bay for trials.

2007 - Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti died at age 71.

2010 - President Barack Obama rolled out a long-term jobs program that would have exceeded $50 billion to rebuild roads, railways and runways, and coupled it with a blunt campaign-season assault accusing Republicans of causing Americans’ hard economic times. (The proposal ended up being blocked by Senate Republicans.)

2015 - Guatemala held its general election; with no presidential candidate winning more than 50 percent of the vote, there was a runoff the following month that was won by former TV comedian Jimmy Morales.

2019 - Zimbabwe’s president announced that Robert Mugabe, the country’s former leader who was forced to resign after a 37-year rule, had died at the age of 95; he had taken power after white minority rule ended in 1980.

2019 - U.S. health officials again urged people to stop vaping until officials figured out why some were coming down with serious breathing illnesses.

1905 - Frank Smith (Chicago White Sox) pitched a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers. The game set a record for the most lopsided margin of victory for a no-hitter in AL history (15-0).

1924 - Urban Shocker (St. Louis Brown) pitched two complete games against the Chicago White Sox. He won both games 6-2.

1943 - The youngest player to appear in an American League baseball game was pitcher Carl Scheib of the Philadelphia Athletics. Scheib was 16 years, eight months and five days old.

1972 - The Summer Olympics resumed in Munich, West Germany, a day after the deadly hostage crisis that claimed the lives of eleven Israelis and five Arab abductors.

1976 - Steve Yeager (Los Angeles) was seriously injured when part of a broken bat struck him in the throat. He was waiting in the on-deck circle when the incident occurred.

1981 - Fernando Valenzuela (Los Angeles Dodgers) tied a National League record of seven shutouts by a rookie pitcher.

1982 - The Pittsburgh Pirates retire Willie Stargell's #8.

1995 - Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles broke Lou Gehrig's "Iron Man" record by playing in his 2,131st consecutive game.

1996 - Eddie Murray of the Baltimore Orioles hit his 500th career home run in a game against the Detroit Tigers. He also became just the third player in major league history to have at least 3,000 hits along with the 500 home runs.

1997 - Martina Hingis wins her first U.S. Open title, defeating Venus Williams.

2000 - Scott Sheldon (Texas Rangers) became the third player in major league baseball history to play all nine positions in one game.

2001 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants became the fifth player in major league history to hit 60 home runs in a season, joining Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Maris and Babe Ruth. (He would go on to hit a record 73 homers.)
