I think the obligation is tied to defending Ukraine in exchange for their giving up their nuclear weapons arsenal after the split of the USSR, not NATO related.

Im rather sure that is what's going to happen. Ukraine is a distraction and ties up European powers, isolating the US, making it easier for China to take Taiwan. China is hoping to take Taiwan without a fight, but if the US does fight over it we are in their back yard, which does not bode well for us.
