A better question is why are they ranked ahead of Bama? Their best wins were against USC and and Pitt. The two best teams they faced in their current 8-2 campaign were against TAMU and Miami which they both lost. Now they will end their season at 10-2 playing Syracuse and Stanford.
Bama's best wins were UGA, and UTN, while also winning against higher ranked teams in Mizzou and Vandy At 8-2. They lost to FSU and Oklahoma. ND is a lock to get into the playoffs scheduling the two best teams on their schedule and losing to them. Bama faces a cupcake and Auburn which will make them 10-2. Why would ND join a conference? @Irishblooded
I actually wouldn't be surprised to see ND fall back to 10 when it is all said and done.
The problem comes down to how they group teams when they rank them. They take X amount of teams in a similar ranking and compare them. So when the AP put ND and Miami so far apart in their ranking it kept the two from being compared in the playoff ranking.
I.e. they take the AP 1-4 and compare them. The AP 5-9 compare them etc. And ND and Miami have not been in that same group of comparison yet. However they well could be by the end of next week.
And while I still say H2H has to matter. I think 2 things can be true also. The committee doesnt want to punish marquee games and close losses otherwise everyone is just going to pad their schedules to ensure maximum stats for playoff seeding. Especially early in the season.
And I would defend this even if it wasnt ND. Lets look at those two losses each team has. Which are better? If it wasnt for the ND game Miami wouldn't be in the top 25 at all right now due to their losses. ND may not have played a murders row. But if you removed the ND / Miami game ND schedule still looks much better than Miamis.
So the TL;DR. H2H matters. But it is only 1 data point not the only data point you have to consider.
I would say if you are interested in a good X and O podcast. Yes it it ND centric. But also very realist here is a great channel.
Bryan and I have worked together for years and he used to run the ND board back on Yahoo. He will call BS when he sees it. Especially from ND staff and fans. He is a previous college QB and coach and has experience knowing what the world is actually like. Not just some guy with a camera and microphone.
He does a daily podcast both during the season. And in the off-season. And has a secondary channel he runs called CFB nation which is not ND centered. But still has great content. In the first part of this particular podcast he speaks specifically to this topic.
