Elon Musk and Trump praised the Canadian trucker vaccine protest that the police say spurred investigations into 'threatening' and 'illegal' behavior

  • Elon Musk and Donald Trump praised Canadian truckers protesting cross-border vaccine mandates.
  • The "Freedom Convoy," on its third day of protesting in Ottawa, says it's in it for "the long haul."
  • The police said they'd launched "several criminal investigations" into incidents during the protest.
Thousands of truckers and protesters gathered in Canada's capital over the weekend to protest cross-border vaccine mandates.

Canada's vaccine mandate for truckers went into effect on January 15. The new rules require US truckers to present proof of vaccination to cross the border and unvaccinated Canadian truckers to get a COVID-19 test and quarantine when they reenter from the US. The US imposed a similar mandate on January 22.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk and former US President Donald Trump have expressed support for the protest, which brought parts of Ottawa to a standstill over the weekend as trucks blocked major roads and demonstrators flooded the streets.

Over the weekend, Musk tweeted a photo of a long line of trucks. He'd previously posted tweets that said "Canadian truckers rule" and "If you scare people enough, they will demand removal of freedom. This is the path to tyranny."

Musk told Time magazine in December that he and his children eligible for the vaccine were vaccinated but that he opposed vaccine mandates.

On Saturday, Trump gave a shout-out to the truckers during a rally in Conroe, Texas.

"We want those great Canadian truckers to know that we are with them all the way," Trump said. He criticized US President Joe Biden's vaccine mandate for truckers and added that the Canadian protestors were "doing more to defend American freedom than our own leaders by far."

Convoys of truckers began arriving in Ottawa on Friday. The group that organized the protest, Freedom Convoy, said on its GoFundMe page that it believed the government was "implementing rules and mandates that are destroying the foundation of our businesses, industries and livelihoods."

On Saturday and Sunday, protesters filled the streets, carrying signs that said things like "Make Canada great again" and "God keep our land glorious and free." Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was moved to a secret location on Saturday over security concerns, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Days before the protesters reached the capital, Trudeau called them a "small fringe minority," saying that about 90% of Canadian truckers were vaccinated.

The police in Ottawa said on Sunday that they'd opened "several criminal investigations" into incidents that occurred during the protests, including "the desecration of the National War Memorial" and "threatening/illegal/intimidating behaviour to police/city workers and other individuals."

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson criticized the protest, saying it made residents "feel they're prisoners in their own home." The demonstrators have said that they intend to stay in the capital and that their aim is to "create chaos" and a "logistics nightmare" for the government, the Daily Mail reported on Monday.

"Right now, yeah, it's really cold, but we hang in there, the days are going to get longer and we take this block party and put it into overdrive," B.J. Dichter, one of the organizers of the Freedom Convoy, said at a press conference, according to the Daily Mail. "We're in this one for the long haul. We don't have a time limit."

BBC News reported that posts on social media suggested US truckers might be planning a similar demonstration in Washington, DC.

OTTAWA—A "freedom convoy" of Canadian truckers is on its way to Ottawa in protest of vaccine mandates. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pushing back at accusations of tyrannical government overreach by claiming the truckers just hate him because he's black.
"As a proud black man, this is the kind of discrimination I have faced my whole life," said Trudeau in a nationwide address over Zoom. "These truckers are a bunch of racist white men. They're probably not even gay."
"They only hate me because I'm black!"
Trudeau, who is currently quarantining in spite of a negative COVID-19 test, also sent off dozens of angry letters to "whoever hires truckers" because of all the racism. While literally shaking, he wrote, "If you oppose vaccines you are racist, sexist, and think a Snow White remake is a good idea."
His intern passed the letters on to Canadian Mounties who rode to the four corners of Canada to take the message to the people.
Trudeau, who is suspiciously not black looking, was offended when members attempted to spin his statement, suggesting he was merely close to the black community.
"I am not speaking metaphorically," said Trudeau. "Look at my skin. It's as black as night. It's midnight black!"
"If you weren't so naively color blind you'd understand," he added.
At publishing time, President Biden lent his support to Trudeau, calling him a 'surprisingly articulate black fella'.
