Just bad luck. It happens, you can't loose them if you don't have them. Its not the first calf I've ever lost and it certaily won't be the last. And yes, cows having and raising calves is where you make money. This was a heifer, so it was her first calf, who knows what happened, calf could have come backwards, or had a leg back, who knows. I try and pay close attention to heifers, had her in the barn, I just should have checked her an hour sooner. When they aren't pushing you usually don't get to excited about it till they do.
