USC football: Mark Sanchez champions Lincoln Riley; says Trojans are now 'on par' with SEC thanks to NIL (247sports.com)

USC football hopes to return to its triumphant days of the past under new head coach Lincoln Riley, and newer developments in the sport such as the NCAA Transfer Portal and name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation are factors that further work in the Trojans' favor at fielding a competitive team quickly. Former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, who played for the Trojans in the tail end of the Pete Carroll era, recently heralded Riley's leadership while assessing that NIL policies put the Trojans right "on par" with top SEC schools that have dominated the sport more recently.

What a dumbass.

Anything to try and sound relevant. Let em win something first. How many times has the trojans fielded talented teams and fell flat?

Well he's got Southern Cal throwing huge amounts of cash at the portal so he's got that going for him. Tennessee is throwing cash like it's nothing. Do you think it's gonna work for them?
Dunno. I'm no talking head prognosticator. Just a fan. We'll just have to wait and see what happens on the field.

Yeah, I'm interested in how things shake out. Never liked the idea of (official) semi-pro football in college. However, it is shaking things up at the moment. Swapping out a large handful of players, some you were banking on for a couple of seasons, is going to cause a lot of coaches a lot of heartburn. Evaluating raw talent is at a new level. Instead of 4-5 years to rebuild a bad team, you are expected to produce immediately.

This year is an interesting example. Per our board, my Cocks finished with the fifth ranked portal class, after the May 1st final tally.

After noticable improvement in play, last year, despite limitations (especially at QB), we have swapped players via the portal and upgraded talent significantly (at least on paper). I'm expecting further (noticable) improvement. We'll see how it shakes out for us.

Upgrading talent on the 1st team in the portal is fine, but if you aren't recruiting well enough to build your 2nd and 3rd team you will still not have the depth necessary to climb the mountain. Saban went to the portal to get Jamison Williams, but he blamed his loss in the NCG on his backups when Williams got hurt.

Better hope so…you’re entering Bama land here in a few years.
I'll be down there first chance I get.
