I need more context, if they were dumping stuff in his dumpster then they are assholes. Did they go get their guns and come back and confront him, not very often someone decides to just take a stroll down an alley with a shotgun. The guy that got shot was being a dumbass.

Im guessing the prosecution said he took the law into his own hands. They could have called 911 and held him at gunpoint while waiting. There were other options here.
