Leave that for a school that is traditionally a bottom tier school. I.e. Kansas, Vandy, Illinois, etc.? Or you would you rather take your first job at a smaller school to refine your process and build yourself into a better P5 offer down the road?

It depends on the school. I wouldn't want anything to do with a dead program like Kansas or Vandy. But I would be interested in a bad program that has potential (recruiting, administrative support, etc.)

If I couldn't get that, I'd look for a better G5 job

I'll take the UNC Pembroke job and turn them into a D2 powerhouse. After that, I'll retire and get a job talking about what it takes to make a Bowl game.

For instance ND just lost their DC last year. Is going to be the new HC at Vandy. Guy is young. Has a super bright future. But come on. It's Vandy. You might get a couple meh years. But you aren't going to light up the world and it could hurt you getting another job at a different P5. But regardless it is going to be a stepping stone. Either to something better or worse.

I think I would rather go coach at a Memphis or Western Michigan hone Mt craft and then make a pitch for a bigger P5 program

I would take the job at Kansas. I think they have somewhat of a good market, and the basketball program brings in good revenue for the school already. Also, how cool would it be to be the one who turned the program around. #BuildTheStatue

I would go either way depending on the specific job conditions. Like any job, I have to know that my employer will give me the tools and authority to do my job. James Franklin had a six and two nine win seasons at Vandy and that got him a promotion to PSU. Mason struggled at Vandy but in the end he went from DC at Stanford to DC at Auburn so I doubt it really hurt his career.
