How do you do preseason rankings?

We know they are all trash. There shouldn't be a poll before week 4 blah blah.

That said. When you look at preseason rankings or make your own. Do you base it on
1) Where you expect that team to be at the start of the season
2) where you expect that team to finish the regular season

For me kinda both.
Stability of Coaching Staff, returnees, progress, schedule, expectations, etc.
I'm rarely correct, so take that for what it's worth.

I have never been a fan of any of the polls, especially before and through the BCS era. As for your question, I prefer them to be as expected to finish but that just means more conjecture baked in. I am warming up on power ratings though.

For the reasons stated, I don't take preseason too seriously. Our current ranking would disappear if QB Sellers was injured in fall practice, or Dylan Stewart, either one.

BESIDES, it doesn't matter, per ODD, the Dawgs are preseason champs, until they ain't. 😜

I base it on NIL money. It aligns pretty much

I only really use preseason rankings to look for outlier surprise teams that I didn't know/wasn't expecting to be good. Like Illinois this year.

90% of the preseason polls are the same usual suspects in some sort of order so I don't really care about who is where, and Kentucky is never one of them anyway 😄
You do know we are especially fucked this year, right?

It's really a combination of both because we can only rank teams on potential when games haven't been played yet.

Pretty sure Tennessee fans took over that preseason champ thing a few years ago. Dawgs are champs.

Personally for myself. I am always looking at a team as they are in the present. Not what I expect them to do in future.

Both since football is such a dynamic week to week when it comes to injuries, teams coming off of big wins, losses, growth and development through the year.

Great examples are FSU a couple years ago left out of the playoff. Were they one of the best teams before the QB injury? I would have had them top 5 to 10. But post injury like 15 to 25.

Or last season. ND looked good beating TAMU at their place to open the season and was a top 10 team at that point. But then after the Northern Illinois loss I have to look at the position they were in at that point with a transfer, couple of injuries, loss they shouldn't have had etc. Not so much what I expected as a record for them in the following 10 games
