I bet Penn State is loving their season opening game, on a Thursday night, at Purdue.

The PSU of the 80's is spinning in their graves about this.

I don’t think we wanna bring up 80’s PSU and where they lie in the afterlife.

The BiG is paying them what, around $5-6 million each to play this game? Do you really think Joe Pa and the fans would have declined that?

Also

80’s PSU Openers

-Colgate
-Temple
-Cincinnati (not the power they are now)
-Nebraska (first kickoff classic, got their head kicked in)
-Rutgers
-Maryland
-Temple
-Bowling Green
-Virginia
-Virginia

Purdue seems about right given the history. Does it not?

That's where I differ. It isn't always about the money. I mean for some schools they are strapped and Covid just did a number on their athletic budgets. Schools that were over leveraged need to do everything they can. I guess I am a little spoiled being a ND fan, that money just hasn't been "the" issue. They just did a near half a billion dollar stadium expansion that actually lowered seating capacity and was funded before they broke ground on it.

So, kinda curious your point.

If PSU isn’t playing a conference game to open the season.

Then they’d be playing a Non-Conference game. Which would either be a Big P5 money game or a cupcake at home they’d be paying to come and play. Either way, money is the factor in all of it.

So what is the issue as you see it, playing on a Thursday to open the season or playing Purdue?

Let me say it this way. I'll wait here while you guys go and get the posts where you were excited for your team to open on a Thursday night against an overall bottom feeder in your conference. Just go ahead and post them here.

As noted above, PSU used to open up against Rutgers and Maryland, seems par for the course.

And considering our performances in season opener the last few years, opening up with Duke wouldn’t be the worst idea.

It took us four weeks to legit get over the ND loss last year. That’s the deal with big openers.

They can give you something to look forward to all summer and spring board a fun year, or they can derail your season before September has even started.

In this reality of college football we have seen time and again what happens in September does affect the playoff committee in November. By the same hand of losing that game in September, they almost pulled off the win, and if they would have, the whole conversation of the year would have been different. College football is better for ND and FSU playing in one of their stadiums on opening weekend. I pick on PSU on this one, because Joe Pa was a huge proponent of ND, PSU, FSU, Miami, all of us conferencing up together back when making that original Big East conference.

And no matter what, no one likes to open up on a Thursday night in a game like this. And that is with me saying that one of my top candidates to replace Kelly was the HC at Purdue. Who I think is one of the smartest coaches in college football.

Sure, but they didn’t. And we saw what happened. I’ve seen what happened when we opened up with Bama and Boise. I also saw what happened when we opened up with Pitt on Monday Night.

Yes, College Football is better for having that game. But I’m failing to see how a conference game, on Thursday Night to open the season isn’t fun either?

PSU has a lot of questions but still a lot of talent and Purdue has been patiently building for a few years. Staring out 1-0 in both the season AND the BIG is potentially huge for both teams. As someone who loves the sport, I’ll gladly take this matchup.

We normally open against FBS or other bottom feeder teams and I have never had an issue with it. We played a bunch of Thursday games as well and again no issues here. There are advantages to doing that and I cannot think of any disadvantage for PSU or Purdue in playing on Thursday. There will be a lot of excitement because it is opening week and more people will watch it on Thursday night than at any timeslot on Saturday. What disadvantages do you see in the game being played on Thursday?

In addition, as someone who lives in PSU country with friends and family having attended and rooted for the school, Thursday Night Labor Day weekend is preferable for them.

They get to watch their team before most other fanbases, they don’t have to wait two more days and they can enjoy the Labor Day Weekend at the Shore (NJ/DE/MD/VA/OBX) which is the biggest beach weekend other than MDW.

And every pregame show on Friday and Saturday will give them more favorable coverage in terms of time and substance than they would have gotten playing on Saturday. It should help recruiting by generating a positive buzz over a win.

That right there is the key word. All those blue chip kids with multiple offers including PennSt will be watching. It's a win win for James Franklin to have an opening game separated from the pack and he understands what it means. He had success at Vandy in the SEC. That says all I need to know.
