This is something that's been on my mind lately and it's time to nip it in the butt. I'm looking forward to having quality conversation with those that agree and disagree with this point. So why not get started? Why the FBS Playoffs should stay at four teams.

It works for FCS/D2/D3/NAIA!

That is correct, it works great for those teams. But let me ask, how many smaller level CFB games do you watch? Majority on here are more dedicated than the average football fan. Most of smaller college football leagues need large playoffs because there is a lack of coverage and a lack of out of conference games.

With no microscopic coverage similar to the FBS, there's no way to pinpoint the 4 elite teams with certainty. Especially in Division 3 football where there is 250 teams.

Most FCS regular sewson schedules are dominated by a full slate of conference games, one FBS money game and very few true out of conference games.

Without being able to pinpoint the exact elite teams these playoffs need to be large.

Every P5 Conference Champion Deserves to be in

Do they really? Let's take the PAC 12 as an example who has missed the playoffs the past three seasons.

In 2019 do the Oregon Ducks deserve a spot at the dinner table after losing to 6-6 Arizona State and losing to the third place SEC West Champions.

Did UGA deserve an at large berth after being slaughtered by LSU in the SECCG?

Many Big Ten teams besides Ohio State want the playoffs to be expanded. Maybe consider your playoffs to be in the regular season and actually beat Ohio State. We don't need to see the same story twice.

The Regular Season Doesn't Give Enough Opportunities

The regular season is a playoff within itself. If you handle your business in the regular season as a P5 team it'll all work out.

Your team needs to be good enough to where the committee can't say no (P5 teams)

Disclaimer

I do think there needs to be a clear cut matrix for a G5 team to follow to know what it takes to give them a chance. There has been a UCF team and a Boise team punished by the system.

The committee needs to held accountable and opinions made on record. We need to know how much work they put into it. IMG_20200104_132233.jpg

Only true stewpit crunchers use the term "nip it in the butt"

8 team playoff to replace conference championship games is needed badly.

This is all I got

Seriously though, 5 conference champs + 3 wildcards. A G5 can qualify only if undefeated. An Independent like ND can qualify with 1 loss if ranked top 8.

This year(rankings before conf. championships):

1. Ohio St.
8. Baylor

2. LSU
7. Wisconsin

3. Clemson
6. Oklahoma

4. Georgia
5. Utah

So all G5 now schedule cupcakes to get to undefeated. Got to require top 25 ranking.

If you go with conference champs, with the SEC commonly having about four teams in the top ten, the SEC could drop the championship game and recognize both division winners as co-champions, to preserve a no-loss, or one loss record for each, or especially if both are undefeated. Better to eliminate a contender in the playoffs than in conference play.

I do think a G5, or independent, should have an avenue to the championship. If you go the conference winner route, I think you are forced to go to 12 teams to be fair to the teams that have managed an undefeated regular season, and to G5 surprise teams that struggle for respectability.

Keep the 5+3 mentioned, but also make the top four, before any conference championship game, the top four seeds and give them a bye. Sort seeding after the conference championship. National championships are determined over a month after the season.

The winners of the 5+3 advance to play these four. For any conference in the top four, next team available represents in the 5+3, or as an alternative, take next highest rank available as substitute, if that conference has no other team in top ten.

I dislike going over 6 teams, but this way gets the current four in, and gets every P5 and G5/indy conference an avenue to the championship. Use exiting bowls where feasible.

You're over thinking it.

Or perhaps you're underthinking it. 😁
I agree. 5 and 3 is easy enough. But @RuffledFeathers is right that a G5 or independent will need to meet some pretty strict standards.
I believe the underdog role is one reason March Madness is so popular. I think it can help with the excitement. But you're right they need to have earned it and at least hang with the #1 team for a half.

Also, I think cold weather neutral sites need to be established and rotated in.

it needed to be 8 when they started it, it needs to be 8 now, it will always need to be 8

the NFL has 32 teams, how many go to the playoffs?

Div 1A (or whatever they call it now) has 132 teams- do the math
