This is something that's been on my mind lately and it's time to nip it in the butt. I'm looking forward to having quality conversation with those that agree and disagree with this point. So why not get started? Why the FBS Playoffs should stay at four teams.
It works for FCS/D2/D3/NAIA!
That is correct, it works great for those teams. But let me ask, how many smaller level CFB games do you watch? Majority on here are more dedicated than the average football fan. Most of smaller college football leagues need large playoffs because there is a lack of coverage and a lack of out of conference games.
With no microscopic coverage similar to the FBS, there's no way to pinpoint the 4 elite teams with certainty. Especially in Division 3 football where there is 250 teams.
Most FCS regular sewson schedules are dominated by a full slate of conference games, one FBS money game and very few true out of conference games.
Without being able to pinpoint the exact elite teams these playoffs need to be large.
Every P5 Conference Champion Deserves to be in
Do they really? Let's take the PAC 12 as an example who has missed the playoffs the past three seasons.
In 2019 do the Oregon Ducks deserve a spot at the dinner table after losing to 6-6 Arizona State and losing to the third place SEC West Champions.
Did UGA deserve an at large berth after being slaughtered by LSU in the SECCG?
Many Big Ten teams besides Ohio State want the playoffs to be expanded. Maybe consider your playoffs to be in the regular season and actually beat Ohio State. We don't need to see the same story twice.
The Regular Season Doesn't Give Enough Opportunities
The regular season is a playoff within itself. If you handle your business in the regular season as a P5 team it'll all work out.
Your team needs to be good enough to where the committee can't say no (P5 teams)
Disclaimer
I do think there needs to be a clear cut matrix for a G5 team to follow to know what it takes to give them a chance. There has been a UCF team and a Boise team punished by the system.
The committee needs to held accountable and opinions made on record. We need to know how much work they put into it.
