Pay or no Pay?

I say they should be able to profit off their likeness but they receive a scholarship so I don’t understand why they need to be paid to play. I’ve heard of recruits needing to sleep on somebody’s couch, but I don’t know the official reasons behind that statement.

Reasons for pay:
1. Given the level of revenue realized by the institutions:
A. Athlete is more a lifestyle 365 days a year than just during the academic calendar.
B. Uniform stipends reduces the need for $100 handshakes and should enable better booster control.
2. And this is the most important point: Opens the door for Conferences to compensate athletes for their likenesses which could bring back NCAAF video games.

Reasons not to pay:
1. Athletes are already getting compensated for the work via scholarship.
2. They get advantages to remain academically eligible such as tutors, meals, living quarters etc.
3. The total compensation package is more than fair in value for the work involved.

BTW, I don't really advocate one position or another on this because IMHO enough legitimate points can be raised on either side that it is a coinflip. I would love for every school have a comprehensive look at the issue involving athletes, coaches and ADs and present all sides' arguments in order for the conferences and then the NCAA to make an informed decision.

No pay. Scholarship money is your compensation. Everyone can survive 4 or less years of living by the seat of their pants(we know they're taken care of.) NFL can create a minor league FB league for guys that wanna get paid. NFL is going to use our state funded Universities as a minor league for THEIR profit? Fuck'dem.

Keep collegiate sports as amateur athletics.

It’s quietly ignored that the players already get cost of living stipends that average over $1000 a month cash for those guys living off campus. I think less people would support paying players if they knew that.

The workable compensation is the paying for likenesses, otherwise Title IX kills it. It seems inevitable and it will kill the chances of being competitive for all but a very few schools.

I used to be against the idea of paying players.

Now I don't care- the absurd amount of money being paid to coaches (and not just head coaches) and the absolutely ludicrous amounts of money being spent on sports facilities puts the lie to college football being about anything but business.

Let them profit off of their likenesses (with oversight), but they shouldn't get a paycheck for playing a college sport. They are getting a free education with more advantages than regular students, along with world class training.
