More and more I'm starting to believe that russia isn't this mighty military force so many harp on about. Or maybe they are using this to rid themselves of the chaff in their military?
Or maybe all they really have that could cause damage is their nukes?

A few things to think about.

1. The last major conflict the Russians were involved in was Afghanistan in the early 80s under the old Soviet Union. That was basically their Vietnam. They don't have a military that is led by combat veterans.
2. Russians started to get their first taste of Capitalism in the 90s.
3. Most of the people in Russia and Ukraine were alive when Communism was thriving and then dying in the USSR.
4. This is a blatant unnecessary invasion on a bordering peaceful nation.
5. Those old people went through hell under Communism with bread lines, etc. They fought like hell to make life easier for their kids and grand kids when the USSR fell. It made those kids and grandkids soft.
6. ^^^That's your current Russian military. They have no desire to be in the Ukraine. They don't understand why they are there, and their parents and grandparents refuse to support sending them.

If Obama hadn't lied to the Ukraine and talked them into giving up their nukes, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Turn about is fair play, love this!!!

Ukrainian helicopters raid oil depot in Russian city: reports

A pair of Ukraine’s Mi-24 “Hind” helicopters have reportedly made a daring raid more than 20 miles into Russia, destroying an oil depot in the southern city of Belgorod on Friday, according to Russian officials and open source reports.

The governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, accused Ukraine of carrying out the attack in a Telegram post, Reuters reported. He said that the two helicopters entered Russia flying at low altitude, presumably to evade air defenses.

Other senior Russian officials, including Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, have acknowledged the strike and argued that it will negatively impact ongoing peace negotiations between the two countries.

Although Ukraine’s top diplomat, Dmytro Kuleva, told reporters in Poland that he can neither confirm nor deny the attack, videos posted to social media appear to show two Mi-24 helicopters launching rockets at the depot and then flying back in the direction of Ukraine at low altitude. A spokesperson for Ukraine’s defense ministry also said he could neither confirm nor deny the attack.

It’s not clear what impact the destruction of the oil depot will have on the Russian war effort. NATO officials have previously indicated that the Kremlin’s forces have had trouble maintaining a steady supply of fuel for vehicles on the front lines, and reported drone strikes have previously targeted fuel trains and other logistics assets.

The strike also serves as further evidence that the war for control of Ukraine’s — and now Russia’s — skies remains more contested than analysts thought possible before the war.

Samuel Bendett, a Russian drone warfare expert with the CNA think tank, previously told Military Times that one of the most “inexplicable” parts of Russia’s war against Ukraine has been the Kremlin’s failure to successfully integrate layered air defense into its combat formations. Russian doctrine calls for battalion tactical groups to include significant air defense capabilities.

“[In Ukraine], Russia doesn’t seem to display the very tactics, techniques and procedures that it’s practiced for years and sought to perfect in Syria...[to provide] adequate cover to its ground forces,” he said.

That MI-24 "Hind" helicopter may be the most badass assault helicopter ever built. It's been around for around 40 years. No shit, it's the SR-71 of assault helicopters. Frankly, I know shit about that helicopter that I'm not allowed to discuss.

You like the Hind over the Apache?

Looks like the Hind sacrifices speed and manueverability for heavy guns...

It doesn't really address the Apache's ability to perform 'pop-up' attacks, using Sat or sappers to target enemies while they remain behind cover and popping up to fire.

I am unaware if the Hind has any such capability.

Sure, the Hind has more raw firepower, but would be acting in a very different role, and be far more vulnerable and less evasive.

Also, we have Warthogs and AC130s for that...

Just my opinion...

The Hind actually has a higher top speed (by 25 mph which doesn't seem like a huge amount, but is 12% faster) and climbs slightly faster (45 ft/min which is negligible). But its range is also very limited and it's ceiling is over a mile lower than the Apache.

I mean, much of that is a wash, but the ability of the Apache to make pop-up attacks is a game-changer, for me...

Both are true, but the armor for the Hind is what I found so impressive. The range and ceiling are so much lower because it's built like a flying tank. Go back and look at the weight difference. That's ALL armor. The Hind can take a helluva pounding without noticing.
