The 12 team playoff is going to suck…change my mind

Here we go, just one more season before the NFL-ization of CFB begins in earnest.

I hate that 4 teams will get a bye. No doubt there will be some fuckery in determining which teams get moved into or out of those hugely beneficial slots. It won’t come down to just the W/L record, we know damn well things like “the eye test” and preseason ranking bias will come into play. TV ratings, conference affiliation and historical status will continue to be a consideration too. The pundits don’t even pretend otherwise any more.

IF playoff expansion HAD to happen, it should have gone to 8 teams. All P5 conference champs get in, plus 3 more of whoever the hell the Suits think will bring in the most money. Every team controls their own destiny for winning their conference…and give out 3 mulligans as needed. I’d be fine with that.

Rant over. Change my mind.

Playoff football is awesome and crazy intense as someone whose team is currently playing in the Super Bowl.

Byes are great as they actually incentivize teams during the regular season.

There’s going to be at least one or two upsets that no one saw coming

You have to have some subjectivity when dealing with 65-130+ teams

More football is always a good thing

I have always preferred an 8 team playoff, but the other bowls outside of the playoff bowls are starting to become meaningless. Id rather have an expansion to 12 than no expansion at all.

I would make the argument that a bye will be possibly more beneficial than playing. Financially speaking, that is an extra home game for the 5th ranked team. Add to that a little less rust going into the quarterfinals and the possibility of a hosting major recruiting event during the playoffs ...

I have wanted a bracketed 12 team play off for years. But The way I wanted it was

1-4 get first round BYE
seed out the rest, with the first round in the home stadium of the higher rank
2nd round in the home stadium of the higher ranked
And then 2 rounds like they are now in neutral site locations.

What I would say, is that I hope as this becomes more of a thing. That conference championships go away (saying that purely as a ND homer that thinks that as long as ND is Indy they are completely useless and have no place in the game, this is an opinon I will completely 180 on the instant ND joins a conference)

Yep. I'd rather UGA have a playoff game in Athens than get a bye.

I agree with a lot of that, but the NFL has a clearly defined path to the playoffs…no BS. And the NFL also has well defined schedules, between teams from different divisions and conferences…even though they don’t vote on who’s quality loss is better than a bad win. In CFB, no one knows how to value a team, because most play garbage OOC schedules.

The NFL also has a draft and fluid scheduling based on results to create parity. Look at Michigans OOC…that’s the path to make the playoffs.

I remember the first CFP rankings show in 2021…Undefeated MSU had just handed undefeated UM a loss, yet was ranked below UM in the standings…the literal, official explanation on live TV was : “if you ignore what happened on the field…”. A good PR team matters. That’s the CFP playoffs. No recourse. Look at UM’s bowl record…historically horrible, particularly notable in “big” bowl games that they often didn’t deserve to play in. (They deserved the CFP this year)

I liked the expansion to 4, because like you, my team could never, ever do enough to be allowed to be in the final top 2. It came a couple years too late for my team to compete, but that’s the way it goes.

In lieu of missing a home game, the "byes" could receive a percentage of the next four teams home game take. Extra incentive to play for the bye. However, I would make it that a repeat "bye" team (back to back) skips getting the cut of money until the next bye game. The very good teams don't need the extra NIL money.😁

Wrong.

No. You have the right of it, but didn’t go nearly far nor scathing enough!

I am against a 12 Team playoff. It is what it is.
I am against NIL in any fashion.
Undecided on first round byes.
Eliminating the History and Tradition of the SEC Championship Game, would cause me to lose a ton of interest in watching.

Definitely thought 8 was the sweet spot. Especially keeping the NY6 bowl games as the venues/tradition. 4 of the 6 host the quarterfinals and the other 2 the semifinals. Then have a neutral venue like now & how Super Bowl is for the championship game. Have the 5 conference champs and 3 at larges including any independent or G5 ranked at a certain spot/record. Guess you can still do it with 12, but I don't like the byes or possibly eliminating CCGs. Only positive of 12 is giving G5 & Independents a better chance of qualifying.
