If I was a foreign military General trying to invade the U.S.A and I had a million troops to burn, I would try to split the country into roughly quarter's. If I could get a beach head in Texas I would ty to push north with troops up through Texas into Oklahoma through eastern Kansas into northern Missouri and southern Iowa where I would split my forces into three and send some north and conquer up to the border, some west, to end up in Denver and along the eastern rim of the rocky mountains to watch my flank, I would send the rest east, bypassing the rough hills of Arkansas and Southern Missouri and drive east through Illinois, Indiana, and ohio, and into western Pennsylvania, bypassing the rough terrain of eastern Kentucky, and Tennessee and eventually pushing through to the east coast. The problem with that is that army will be in a shooting gallery from the time they landed, but the terrain, is relatively easy to go across. They could also try and secure a second beach head in eastern Florida or South Carolina and move North, up the coast, and another contingent moving west to try and hook up with what's been established in Texas. They too would be in a shooting gallery, and would lose a lot of troops. Finally, another push would come in from Oregon, and another from Southern or Central California. Both would try to push towards each other securing the west coast, trying to stay mostly out of the rougher mountains. That would isolate areas, and effectively cut any supply chains and troop redeployment from other regions of the U.S.

You're onto something although I'd rather see the west coast invaded starting with Seattle, Portland and the Bay Area.
