The VA in general has changed so much over the years and B'ham made great strides. In 1991 I could go there with a 7:30 appointment for my service connected knee and it would be well after lunch, normally about 2:30 before I even had my vitals checked. And of course, average wait time to see ortho was 9 months and then a18 months wait to have a knee scoped.Good Morning, went to the VA hospital in Birmingham yesterday for a checkup with my cardiologist, everything was fine but i just wanted to give a shoutout to the va, after I got out of the Navy in 87, i went into the private world and had BCBS insurance for the rest of my adult life, and just recently got enrolled in VA healthcare and was able to drop the private insurance and go full VA.. the best decision I ever made, the difference in care is night and day. some may have a different tale, but everytime im treated with respect and in a timely manner and in a clean environment, and by the way, the Birmingham VA is next door to and in partnership with UAB hospital.
Wow! i do remember the horror stories from back in the day, Im glad I didnt have to deal with that back then and so very glad things have gotten better, our veterans deserve better! The VA in general has changed so much over the years and B'ham made great strides. It wasn't all horror, my Dad got a stint through the VA and UAB back when it was on clinical trial. At the time, Dad's was one of the first 300 stents ever implanted in a human, by the Australian doctor that invented the technique. It was cutting edge, prevented open heart surgery on my Dad and never gave him a problem in 25+ years. He also got a cornea implant through the VA with excellent results. And that is not an indictment on the staff who were some of the best I've ever encountered. Back then the saying was the VA had great medical care, when you could actually get it. The problems were the system, not the people in or executing it.Wow! i do remember the horror stories from back in the day, Im glad I didnt have to deal with that back then and so very glad things have gotten better, our veterans deserve better!
