A good friend of mine went to UM (Ann Arbor). That school has a majority of out of state students, mostly from the east coast, and from NYC and the burbs in particular.

I was introduced to one of those students. His parents had never been anywhere in the US other than NYC metro area and California until their kid attended UM. This was normal to them, as in, they were surprised anyone would want anything else.

I did my basic in NJ and those people would talk about going two exits down a turnpike like they were taking a major journey to a foreign country.
