When was the last time your favorite team was caught with the hand in the cookie jar? What was for it for, and what was the sentence?

For ND, about a half dozen kids got caught getting 'illegal academic assistance' from another student over the course of two years (during which she graduated and continued to help as an alumni). ND self reported it (for some idiot reason).

Ramifications was a 5,000 dollar fine, and vacated wins over the 2013-2013 seasons.. Here is the statement from the NCAA about it

During two academic years, the former student trainer and two football student-athletes engaged in academic misconduct when the former student trainer completed coursework for the student-athletes. These student-athletes, in addition to a third football student-athlete, also committed academic misconduct individually. The university determined the three student-athletes violated its academic integrity policies. The misconduct resulted in the student-athletes playing while ineligible — one student-athlete during the 2012-13 season and the other two student-athletes during the 2013-14 season.

The former student trainer also provided impermissible academic assistance to six additional football student-athletes in a total of 18 classes. She provided the assistance while she attended the university and a year after she graduated. Two of the student-athletes violated the university’s academic integrity policies. The remaining four student-athletes were not enrolled at the time the violations were discovered, so they were not subject to the university’s policies.

The NCAA claimed our former coach Galen Hall gave player Jarvis Williams a couple hundred bucks to make a child support payment which Jarvis was late on. Both Hall and Williams denied it. Nobody saw an exchange of money. There was no evidence presented to support the allegation.

But on the basis of the NCAA’s “cuz we think so” standard of “proof” we were found guilty and sentenced to a bowl ban in 1990.

In response, Florida and 7 other states passed legislation requiring the NCAA to follow due process lest its penalties be vacated by state courts.

The NCAA implemented a legitimate appeals process unlike the Kangaroo courts it had before and started requiring the presentation of some kind of actual evidence against schools for charges to be maintained. Unfortunately, the NCAA’s overreach resulted in its wings being clipped so hard it allowed actual cheaters to start getting away with slaps on the wrist again. But they brought it on themselves with how capricious and unjust they were back in the 80s.

Evidently because we bid on a player with our bagmen against Oklahoma, Texas and SMU in the 80's it was egregious enough that the NCAA led by a University of Oklahoma Alum decided we should receive a TV Ban, Bowl Ban, Scholarship Ban, Limited our roster and prohibited any recruiting trips or recruiting groups on campus.

This happened right after Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas and Mike Gundy graduated and killed our program until Mike Gundy resurrected us in 2005.

***Edit*** oh and the player in question was WR Hart Lee Dykes
