When is it Time to Hang it Up?

Focus on the kids. If you’re helping them, that’s why you do it. They’re the ones who are going to remember you anyway. To hell with the parents.

“We don’t stop playing because we get old. We get old because we stop playing”
Coming from a guy that played flag football until 40 years old, and even played a season with my 18 year old son, I call BULLSHIT!

I got old playing, and my achillies pain, and constant worry of them finally snapping, is the shit of horror movie level anxiety daily.

Well started wrestling this past Thursday. Once we get through this season, I will be semi retired from coaching youth sports. I cannot wait. The wrestling season shouldn't be too bad to go out on.

Had an interaction with a moronic fan about football. Basically told me he hoped I had a small part in the program because of how critical I had been on certain things & can't just enjoy 4 years of state runs. I let it rip on him and how these past 4 runs are courtesy to many people including myself working with those kids. The kids did it on the field, but it was the staff from youth, MS, and HS working together to put in our system that allowed these 4 years of 3 runner ups & 1 title to happen. Before that it was 1 appearance & title with way too many failures of teams that should have made it. Really tired of sunshine pumpers that think it just happens by luck.

Hi OP, thanks for your dedication to youth sports, you are valuable and will continue to be so. I recently watched the Christmas blockbuster Red One starring DWayne "The Rock" Johnson & Chris "Captain America" Evans. Pretty good flick, better than Die Hard.

Even with those two movie icons in the show, it was JK "Santa Claus" Simmons A.K.A. "Red One" that had the best message of all.

He said:
His "list" should not be a binary judgment of people as "good" or "bad". Santa believes that people are complex and that even adults can still have the innocence of a child.

My takeaway is that we are all kids at heart and you shouldn't forget the kid in all of us. No matter 6 y.o. or 65, we are all athletes in our minds.
My suggestion to you is stage an event with each of your teams' seasons and invite the parents to a practice that includes a scrimmage pitting them against their kids. SUPER FUN FOR EVERYONE! Get them all Frosty's & Fries after.

Here's the rub:
Make sure you take detailed notes on the names of parents who make errors and how they act when losing and/or winning. Use that info throughout the season to jab them when they nag at you or the kids about performance issues.

Sincerely,
Dr. TINP

I'm just tired of the wishy washy attitudes. People sure like to complain they don't have the success they wanted. Then you help them get there but they didn't like how you got them to it. Constructive criticism isn't well received it seems. Saban, Urban, Harbaugh, and etc all use it and are strict in their standards. I'm sure the clown that had an issue is a grandparent or just a fan. One of those where you can't ever raise your voice or get on a kid. Kills me how many more are like that and are the first to bitch when they're kid or kids' team get whooped.

I sincerely like your competitive spirit and helping the kids in the community. Seems you care a lot for sure. Just maybe take a break and do something else in service. You seem capable at whatever your mind and passion leads you to.

Yeah definitely will be. Going to just help my kids & family members individually if they want it. Yeah somewhat competitive but not too much with the youth part. Older kids sure can be. It's more of having pride in your community and yourself in doing things the right way, whether it's hard or not. Going to just chill for a half year or year before I find something not competitive but a worthy cause.

Almost to the finish line! This weekend is the last hurrah. We have had a productive & successful wrestling season. Of course some bumps here & there but those have been worked out. Be interested to see how the club does moving forward. Also curious to see how the youth football program does as well. The last time they struggled with my absence. My first year back was a bit of a struggle making corrections. Oh well, best of luck to both of them!

You have poured your soul into youth athletics. Words can't describe the respect I have for you. Be proud. Protect yourself and return to what you love at your own pace.

^^^ second this...
I have no qualification to weight my opinion, but, third’ed.
Thanks guys! Definitely will be protecting myself. Today was a good example with the 1st of 2 wrestling tournaments this weekend. The old coach I took over for in the wrestling club was there with his current club (his home school) and my alma mater's club coach, (the club my son was wrestling for today) gave my kid crappy looks. All because the club I coach beat the alma mater's club and has had success after the other coach left. I didnt say a word. Just smiled and went on my way. Yep, I'm making the right choice to avoid that bs drama.

Well retirement has been pushed back a tad. My son was asked to try out for what we call "Farm League" baseball by his Coach Pitch coach from last year. Farm League is player pitch for usually 8 to 10 and sometimes new 11 year olds. My son's birthday is the cutoff but he will only turn 7. I told the wife I didn't want to go but my son insisted I watch. I could tell from the Farm League coach he had already made up his decisions before the "try outs". Even heard a couple (who will probably help coach Farm League) talking about rosters and maybe 1 kid there was going to be on the team (relative of theirs). So on registration day prior we put NO for coaching. So 30 mins after try-outs they call my wife asking if I'd want to coach Coach Pitch (Head Coach) as they were moving my daughter up from Tball to Coach Pitch (she didn't try out & isn't ready). Wife asks and they beat around the bush my son didn't move up & also would be Coach Pitch. I tell wife No on head coach & only help if no one else will. Supposedly no one else will help.

That's a tough one and best of luck. <Insert Godfather Clip Here> It really is a shame that nobody else is stepping up.

If they do another makeup game on Monday, I'm back to semi retired as we will be gone. If later I'll have one more game until semi retired. It hasn't been too bad "helping"/ assistant coaching. The head coach is kinda of an oddball but that's what happens when there is a shortage of coaching. I had a pair of brothers from wrestling & another wrestler from this year besides my kids, so that was nice. Half the team already had me as a coach & listened. The other half were decent listeners besides the head coach's 2 kids. They weren't horrible though, just thought that their dad was the only coach. It has been awesome watching my son dominate this year. Next year he will struggle with player pitching. His fielding and knowledge of where to go has been amazing. My daughter also took a step up and hit the ball every time. She also started trying to field the grounders (doesn't want anything to do with pop ups haha).

What you need is a guy who scored four touchdowns in one game.... all else would be irrelevant with this kind of talent.
