Winter pictures

Northern Dame… a valley firm. Great folks!
I'm guessing you have winter gear but if not my nephew just picked up a refrigiwear suit at AIH for 20% off. He showed me the suit a few weeks ago when he was up here ice fishing and it's light as fvck.

I got bunny boots, heated vest and gloves, snow pants, the works… did a 5 week winter gig but it’s almost entirely summer work. As you know, gear is everything up here and AIH is the shit and affordable.

That's a pretty big woodpecker too. Had a couple of them visit my back yard this past summer.
Biggest one I’ve ever seen we got lucky to get a good picture. They are fascinating I didn’t know they made so many different noises. Expecting snow this weekend hopefully we can get some good pics

You did get really lucky. Only pics I got of ours was a couple blurry pics of their heads poking up over the fence.

Cardinals are awesome. There’s nothing better than living in nature imo never cared for city living. Love the cardinals we have woodpeckers here too View attachment 8499

Giant Red-headed woodpecker. It's an endangered species. Actually very rare to even see one. It's so endangered, that the Department of the Interior actually wants all sightings to be reported.

I believe you are thinking of the Red Cockaded woodpecker. The ones @GhostInTheMachine and I saw seem to be the Pileated woodpecker.

Pileated Woodpeckers are year-round residents to all of North Carolina, but less common at suet feeders than other species like the Downy. They are the largest species of woodpeckers in NC, as well as North America. Like other woodpeckers they readily eat at suet feeders when offered, but as I mentioned they can be quite elusive and hard to attract. This bird is one that I am still trying to attract to my yard and have yet to see one at my new house.

Actually saw another one a few days ago perched on a no fishing sign in one of our neighborhood ponds.

We live in an old farmhouse from the 1920’s and get a lot of wildlife. Got lucky to get 4 pics off quick. Very big and pretty bird. Not sure how common they are in NY first one I’ve seen but we have a family of them here. We also have smaller grey woodpeckers that go for the suet. Only have one decent picture of them tho they’re fast. Got another of a hawk or falcon but couldn’t get one with his head turned DD1F98DD-6840-4038-B383-36A886AED47E.jpeg

Imma get a suet feeder out this spring. We so far only have a hanging seed holder, but have had 2 different types of woodpeckers show up just to that.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the big one you guys saw and photographed (the Pileated) is common over a lot of the US.

That pic, from behind looks like a falcon to me, but I'm by no means any kind of expert lol

I’m no expert either but watching the birds is fun. I do know I wouldn’t mess with it tho
