Haves and have nots- who can compete for a Natty?

This came from a discussion on the PSU board about Auburn paying a coordinator $2.5 million/year. A poster suggested (and I'm afraid I have to agree) that there are only a handful- maybe 10-15 programs which realistically have the resources to compete. Are you out of the running if you lack a huge stadium, big fanbase and donors willing to keep the money flowing? What about the other 120 odd programs?

Is this true?

Should it be?

As a fan of a "have", I think it stinks.

I have to admit, it has become somewhat of an arms race. The more a program is willing to spend in terms of staffing and facilities, seems to have a direct correlation to the product they’re putting on the field each Saturday.

Boise State will never have the spending power of most P5 teams, yet, they have a history that most P5 teams rightfully envy. I understand that they are an exception to the rule, but there are always exceptions. UCF in 2017.

The system as it's designed now does not allow the opportunity for that upstart small school to be a part of their "playoff". I get it. It's about the money.

Frankly....that's a damn shame.

It would take a cinderella story for a have not to win it all.. an incredible undefeated season and some luck in the polls.

UCF proved in 2017 that a perfect season of beating the fucking brakes off every opponent you faced wasn't enough. The powers that be (money hungry bastages) will never allow a small school access to the CFP. I hate that truth.

thats why I really like the 8 team model with conf champs and 3 at large.. and even then in some years 3 might not be enough to grab the UCF's, and the really good non conf champ teams..

Here to represent the have nots.

The thing is, if his view is correct (and again, I think it probably is) even most of the P5 teams are also really on the outside looking in. Yeah, a Texas Tech is going to beat an Oklahoma now and then, but the playing field is not a level one when the big boys can spend pretty much as much as they want to and the programs in the middle and bottom end of the conferences don't have the cash. If you're selling out your 100,000 seat stadium and the other guy isn't selling out his 60,000 seat place you have a lot more income, regardless of conference tv revenue sharing.

I don't have a solution, I just see a problem.

Well, it’s kind been that way for pretty much the history of the sport. Give or take some schools rising and some falling due to various factors, but every decade you’ll see about 5-7 teams have won a title and usually those same 5-7 teams finishing in the top ten. It is what it is.

I have been pushing that forever. Make every conference championship matter as far as a playoff goes, and it still gives the voters in the media some say … lets face it, that is the real opposition, the establishment trying to remain in power. Have the first round the Friday/Saturday after the Army/Navy game and allow the first round losers into bowl games(keep the hard limit on number of practices total). The top four seeds get a bonus home game.

Auburn cheats.

The establishment will definitely protect itself. Like when Boise and TCU both made BCS games but had to play each other. Too scared that they both might win otherwise.
