When I was growing up, if a US Senator had been knocked to the ground by agents of the state, there would be a picture in our history textbook and the “incident” would have a name and it would be a dark reminder of how close we once came to disaster. Time would stop for it.

I watched a former President and candidate get shot and almost half the country cheered for it.

Whatever “civilized” politics of America was gone. Obama was the death throes of it.

Turns out the suspects weren’t outsiders crashing the party — they were already marching in it.

Salt Lake City Police say the four individuals involved were part of the protest in some capacity, not random bystanders or drive-by attackers.

Details on motive remain unclear, but the connection to the protest itself is no longer in question.
