Serious Conversation: COVID-19 and College Football

I think I'm convinced that there won't be a full season. For a lot of major cities, hospitalizations aren't expected to peak until mid-April. Then it'll probably be about 6 weeks after that where they start letting out ONLY SOME people from quarantine. You're looking at the end of May at that point. Then it'll take a couple weeks to see if numbers start to spike again. If they do, we are back to the situation we are in now. Also, with different groups being let out, it means full teams won't be showing up until much later than normal. At that point (depending on how late this goes), is it even feasible and probable to field a team capable of competition? If people are smart and looking forward to the season already, my suggestions would be: no FCS games, cancel out-of-conference games for the first half of the season, and push back conference games to start as late as possible. Opening weekend would be like beginning of October.

I’m starting to lean heavily no season this year. And, honestly, I don’t know if the sport can ever come back from it, at least come back from it anywhere close to what we’ve know for a long time. No sport has ever seen a complete one year shut down of its entire on and offseason. AND, not sure this wouldn’t bleed into 2021.

Serious talk

I’m not watching sports unless fans are in the stands. They are a crucial element to an athletes performance depending on what site they play on, and add validation to the viewer at home that others are interested in the game and you just love seeing all the gear the fans have on sometimes even if it’s just a sweater.

I agree with that. Wrestlemania in front of no crowd will be a disaster.

Sports survived World War 2. They can survive CHINA flu.

They didn’t have a complete shut down during World War 2. Football was played, baseball continued, hockey and basketball continued. They were viewed as distractions and morale boosters to the public.

Now, they’re views as potential death bombs and threats to the general public. If we’re waiting on a vaccine before big events can happen, we’re looking at a possible two years of no actual play at all. It may survive, but I’m not going to try and pretend that it’s not under a serious threat of irreparable damage.

I think it'll forever change the sporting landscape....I think many smaller CFB programs will shut down, and superfluous sports (WNBA for example) may die. But the big sports will come booming back as they're cathartic to people and too ingrained into cultural collective necessity. In many ways, some sports may comeback stronger than ever.

I hope so, but College Football is going to be in real trouble of losing more than a few small programs. And while it’s cathartic, we may after a couple of years of not having them change said view.

I just honesty don’t know.

How did I become the optimist and you the pessimist?

There were times when he and I (me and him? never know that rule) had civil conversations. There were times when we didn’t. Just about the same with me and most people on Rivals, minus a couple of guys that I only wish nothing but the worst for and have zero desire to be civil to because they’re genuine POS and I don’t like them.

You can call me by my name(insert David Allen Coe video) ... my wife says that if I devote my life to improvement then I might make it to just POS ... my son and brothers agreed.

As someone mentioned earlier, July 1 is the key date. It's the Sports New Year and basically New Year's for the NCAA and NAIA. If by then things haven't improved enough, we're looking at a lost season.

You think the whole season will be lost? Or just a pushed back starting date with OOC games cancelled?
